Wishes: If only/ I wish …

We can express our wish ‘I wish/If only’ using:
a.    would   
b.    could          
c.    past tense
1. I wish/ If only someone would…
– If the speaker wants somebody to do something for him/her.
Eg: I wish my dad would gift me an iPhone on my birthday.

2. I wish/ if only I could …
– If the speaker wants to do something himself/herself but can’t do it.
Eg: I wish I could fly in the sky.
3. I wish/ if only + past tense
– If the speaker is not satisfied with the present and wants to change it.
I wish it was a holiday today.
